Joe Weiss is a seasoned expert in industrial control systems (ICS) cybersecurity, with over 40 years of experience in the energy sector. He is the Managing Partner at Applied Control Solutions, LLC, a Life Fellow of the International Society of Automation (ISA), Emeritus Managing Director of ISA99 (the ISA committee for ICS cybersecurity), and a Senior Member of the IEEE. He is also a licensed professional engineer (PE), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), and Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC).
Weiss has significantly contributed to the development of cybersecurity standards for critical infrastructure. He co-authored the book Protecting Industrial Control Systems from Electronic Threats and has published over 80 papers on instrumentation, controls, and diagnostics. His work influenced standards like NIST SP800-53 and NIST SP800-82, and he has been involved with organizations focused on electric reliability and electrotechnical standards.
In 2024, Weiss was inducted into the Process Automation Hall of Fame for his pioneering efforts in ICS cybersecurity. He has compiled a database of over 1,250 actual control system cyber incidents, emphasizing the need for strong cybersecurity in industrial environments. He advocates for integrating cybersecurity into engineering practices and addressing the unique challenges of operational technology.
Currently, Weiss leads Applied Control Solutions, providing thought leadership and consulting to improve the security and resilience of industrial control systems worldwide.
